What was I doing this time last year?

About this time last year was when I was really getting my act together application wise.  I was 100% set I was applying to the LGO program and had also decided to only apply to MIT.  The other schools I was considering were Michigan and Northwestern, both with great operations programs, but nothing that compares to LGO.  If I didn’t get in I would wait a year and apply to those programs.  Luckily, I got accepted.

So around this time is when I was finalizing who was going to write my recommendations.  I understand many of you are probably applying to more than one school, but I can make some general suggestions.  First, you want to find people that know you well and can pull out your best traits in your recommendation.  If you can’t find anyone that knows you that well, just make sure you give them a lot of information about you and let them know about what you are trying to portray to the school.

Another thing I did to help my own essays and to give insight to the people writing my recs was to do research on the program.  I read the website, talked with alums and talked with people currently in the program.  With this information I was able to let my recommenders (not sure if this is a word?) know why I was a good fit for this program and also for myself, how I could “sell” myself to the admissions committee.

Essay wise, I downloaded the five essays (I think they are the same this year) and started jotting notes down every day at work for each of the essays.  I came up with 2-3 potential topics I could write for each of the main 3 essays.  I eventually trimmed these down, although I changed one of the essays at last minute to fit with my story.

Finally, I was making sure that my GRE score (yes, I applied using the GRE - I never took the GMAT) was sent to Sloan and that my transcripts were in order.

Feel free to ask any further questions about the app or visiting.  I would be happy to help.

If you are interested in visiting on our ambassador day and information evening this fall, please fill out the form.  It will be held on October 25th.
