Are you the class of 2014?
It’s that time again, recruiting for next year’s LGO class.  Ambassador day will be November 7th this year and is run by the first year students.  Last year I was in charge of running the day, but this year an able group of 13’s are in charge.  I’m looking forward to being able to meet more people this year rather than helping coordinate activities.   Here is an overview...

Wrapping up the internship
I’m winding down my internship at Raytheon and thought I would share a few thoughts. First, I think people in the program get a lot of anxiety around the whole internship process.  People worry where they are going to be located, what project or focus they will work on and who they will be working for.  I understand its a great way to get easy access to a company or location, but people...

better technology is not always better
When I went to get money from Financial Aid this last week (living on loan money, yay!) I found out that they added a new feature.  Instead of getting a paper check and leaving with the “money” in hand, they had now enabled direct deposit and preferred for me to use that method.  As a lover of the internet and technology, I was pleased. The person told me all I had to do was...

Why failure is a good thing. Really.
Failing is an essential part of the learning process.  In many of the places I’ve worked and studied, I’ve noticed many people with an enormous fear of failure.  As an engineering undergrad, I learned to fail very quickly.  Going down for the count with my fellow classmates, we learned quickly how little we knew and that we needed a new, different approach.   This mindset has been an...

– Dr. W. Edwards Deming If management stopped demotivating their employees… — Lean Blog The first time I heard about the program formerly known as LFM was through a blogger, Mark Graban.  He is the author of one of the best Lean resources on the web, leanblog.org.  I read it in college and knew...

reading from the fall
To be honest, I did not do a lot of the assigned reading from the fall.  Although I love reading, I was balancing trying to be a good boyfriend with spending a ton of hours with school work.  I have always prioritized people that are close to me even if it will hurt my grades a little.  This doesn’t really bother me because I know I love learning.  Getting to the point, I am getting around...

Anonymous asked: Hi Paul,

i graduated with a BS in EE from Purdue last May, and I'm a few months away from finishing my first year at work, which is pretty great so far! i'm working as a network engineer, and I’m happy I learned about the LGO quite early, so now I have plenty of time to prepare a solid application. I wanted to ask you which projects and assignments i should focus on...

Question time: You took the GRE right? Did you...
I took the GRE.  I sat down with the GMAT book for 10 minutes because I was going to apply to both LGO and Tauber at Michigan.  However, my only real motives to go to Michigan were to hang out with my old roommate from college while he was in his final year of law school.  I really like him, but I guess my motivation wasn’t that strong.  I really just wanted to stay in Boston.  I had taken...

Question time: if you could re-do one thing about...
I am not sure what you mean by “re-do.”  I don’t do regret, so definitely wouldn’t change anything I’ve done so far.  In terms of the program, I think an opportunity for improvement could be with how we structure the internship. As you know, I’m currently doing an internship with Raytheon.  As with most large corporate companies that typify our partners, the...

2 weeks down
Done with two weeks of my internship at Raytheon.  After working in a service industry for two years, its been quite a challenge to adjust to the corporate world, especially in a union manufacturing plant.  A couple good things: they work a 9-80 schedule, which means 80 hours over 9 days and then every other friday off.  big fan of this not having to do work after work and on the weekends.  i...

local and "off-cycle"
I know its been a while.  I’m not going to promise to write more because I thats what eveyone does on blogs right before they stop writing forever.  Instead, I’ll try to post some quick remarks every so often. On Monday I started my internship with Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems in Andover, MA.  Being local, I can still commute from my current apartment.  This means I can still hang out...

Anonymous asked: I hear that the LGO network is more tightly knit within and does not cross over to the Sloan network. Can you comment on if there are interactions across?

The LGO seems to be a great program on the face of it and I wonder why there are not many many more applicants?

a day in the life, volume 1
I remember reading recruiting websites when I was looking for jobs after college and remembered that one of the coolest thing to read was always a “day in the life” showing what someone did on an average day.  Although there is definitely not an average day, I am going to attempt to share some of my days over the course of the year.  Here we go: 7:30 AM - Arrive at the LGO office...

leading at ambassador day
So yesterday was our Ambassador Day and Information Evening.  Its our annual event where we invite prospective applicants to come on campus and meet the students, attend a class, tour the campus and ask questions to panels of alumni and current students.  I attended this event last year and it was a great way to quickly find out an enormous amount about the program in one day. As I wrote before,...

Come find out more next week...
Last year I was excited to be coming to MIT for the ambassador day and information evening for LGO.  I know I wanted to apply to this program, but didn’t know a lot about the details of the program yet.  Through the day and nigh session, I got to meet the students, interact with alumni and professors and hear first hand what the program was all about.   This year, I am the chair of the...

What was I doing this time last year?
About this time last year was when I was really getting my act together application wise.  I was 100% set I was applying to the LGO program and had also decided to only apply to MIT.  The other schools I was considering were Michigan and Northwestern, both with great operations programs, but nothing that compares to LGO.  If I didn’t get in I would wait a year and apply to those programs....

"How can I convince/prove to admissions that even though I've been in consulting for the past 3 years, I'm ultimately passionate about manufacturing and operations? Does my consulting-only background disqualify me from being admitted?"

down the stretch we come...
So its the final week.  Well, we actually only have two days remaining.  A stat test and a group leadership stand between me and my 12 day break before MBA orientation.  I am looking forward to relaxing, hanging out with some friends I haven’t seen in a while and hanging out at the family lake house in CT. It has been quite the summer.  Made a lot of great friends, was challenged...

grad school is intense
So I have completed nine weeks of the summer LGO program.  School-wise, I think I am doing pretty well and am learning a lot.  Outside of the classroom, however, different story.  The first misstep was when I went on a whale watch with the CLGO (China Leader for Global Operations program) students who were visiting for a week.  I’ve been on many boats of all sizes and never gotten sick....

Our first plant trek
Last week, our class went on its first plant trek to Gorton’s in Gloucester, MA.  Going on the different plant treks is definitely one of the coolest things about the LGO program.  We do 3-4 day trips this summer and then do a two week tour next January.  In addition, during spring break there is an optional international plant trek.  I am pretty excited about the trip in January as we get...

best parts of being a student
I really enjoy being a student.  I enjoy the flexibility of being able to do things during the day (granted sometimes this flexibility disappears when there is a lot of work), and some of the perks that being on a campus offers.   First, being able to go to the gym during the day is a huge plus.  Instead of getting home from work, going to the gym and coming home for dinner at 7:30 I can go...

a little bit more about me
Where am I coming from?  Why did I choose LGO? Or more importantly, how did I convince MIT to accept me?  I won’t answer all these questions right now, but I will address these basic mysteries throughout the summer.  If you have any specific questions you want me to answer, please submit through the link on the right. I figured I would start my story with a story about why I became to be...
